Discussion Questions

1. Today is our fourth week in the sermon series of Jonah and the Relentless Love of God. We find Jonah finally heading to Nineveh to do what God has asked him to do.  If you haven’t had a chance to read Jonah 3, take some time to do that now.

2. Jonah literally found himself at his lowest point in chapter 2.  His mind and heart shift in the belly of the “whale” is nothing short of a miracle. He did a complete 180…he turned towards God and praised Him for bringing his life up from the pit. Do you remember the last time our gracious and forgiving God lifted you up and put you back on your feet? What was that like for you?

3. God speaks to Jonah a second time, “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” That message from Jonah 1:1 being, “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.” Like Nineveh our world is full of darkness. It presents itself to us every day whether directly in front of us or through our media. The Bible encourages us in Ephesians 5 & 6 to, “walk in the way of love”, “Live as children of Light”, “make the most of every opportunity”, “put on the full armor of God, so that when darkness comes, you may be able to stand your ground”. How are you deflecting the darkness? Are you able to stand strong and ready to make the most of every opportunity to be light in this world, in your neighborhood, and with your family? Please pray now for that courage, and a willing heart to be His bright light in this dark world.

4. As Pastor Jon has mentioned the last few weeks, many people don’t know the end of the Jonah story as they have only heard the children’s book version.  The story does not end in chapter 3.  There is one more chapter.  If you have not read chapter 4 yet, please do so.  I pray that you will be able to read it with an open mind reflecting not only on Jonah but on your own life and mindsets toward others….”others” meaning the hard ones to love.
