Biblical Locations: The Mountain
Discussion Questions
1. Read for yourself Exodus 3:1-6. What stands out to you as you read this passage?
2. In the ancient imagination mountains are seen as the meeting places between earth and
the heavens, places where the sky touches down on the land. Because of this people
believed that mountain tops were the homes of gods. How is this view different from a
more modern view of a mountain as a place of recreation and adventure?
3. After their rescue from slavery, the descendants of Abraham were invited up onto a
mountain to meet with God, but due to their fear only Moses goes up to learn God’s
wisdom. So, God’s presence comes down instead, to live among them in the Tabernacle
and later the Temple. What does it mean to you that we have a God who isn’t far away,
but comes down to us in our times of need?
4. Later the prophets wrote of a time where God’s presence would once again come down
to us. Jesus was born, and He became the place where Heaven and earth met once
again. It’s in Jesus that we can be close to God and experience His blessing and grace.
What does it mean to you that this real mountain presence of God is available to us
through a relationship with Jesus?
