1. Read for yourself Matthew 4:1-11. What stands out to you as you read this passage?
2. The Wilderness is a major theme in the Bible. Adam and Eve are removed from the
Garden and placed out in the wilderness. After the killing of his brother, Cain flees into
the wilderness. Moses meets God in the burning bush in the wilderness. The Israelites
wander in the wilderness. Can you think of more biblical stories that take place in the
wilderness?
3. The wilderness is a place of trial, of divine encounters, of rebellion and judgement, but
also a place of new beginnings. After their failure to live up to God’s desires God’s
people eventually find themselves out in a new wilderness, captive to other nations. The
prophets spoke of one who was to come who would pass His test in the wilderness and
draw God’s people back to Him. How do you see Jesus’ actions in Matthew 4:1-11 as
tying into these other wilderness accounts.
4. Have you ever found yourself in the wilderness of life? What was it like for you? How did
you journey through that tough time?
